Batch 3

It’s been a while, summer means summer camp which means my schedule really fills up! here is the third and largest batch of scans I’ve done so far. If any of them had a paper description attached, I’ve included it with the image.

THIS ONE oh my god, someone drew this guy’s eyes and mustache back in with a pen? So funny, and also a sad destruction of the image.

      1. Not that I’ve seen yet, but I have a small personal collection of my own stereoscopic cards. Will definitely check out your work! I’ve always wanted to animate them.

      2. Cool, I started collecting stereoviews a few years ago myself and now have a few hundred. Haven’t scanned any though because New York Public Library, the Library of Congress, and other other institutions make their humongous collections available online, so I animate ones from those places.

  1. Here are my guesses about what is going on in some of the ones in this batch:
The #3 one looks like an authentic (not staged) scene of soldiers gathering dead bodies for burial.
For the #7 one, it was actually pretty common to draw in facial features of people on glass negatives (or in this case probable lantern slide) and paper photos if details were lost due to overexposure or other defects.
In #8, it looks like Austrian soldiers are hanging a civilian or partisan. I’ve seen a bunch of similar photos like this of Austrians executing Serbs, so that is one possibility of what it depicts.
In #18, it looks as though one of the parading soldiers is carrying an American flag.

Images #4, #5, #6, #13, and #22 look like they are possibly copy negatives of pictures found in newspapers, magazines, or books of the era. Are any of them published by Underwood? Could have been made by an amateur lantern slide enthusiast.
